How Pipe Bands Australia Set A
New Digital Standard for Their National Championship
Pipe Bands Australia is the governing body for the Australian Pipe Band National Championships, an annual competition that brings together the country’s finest pipe bands to compete at the highest level.
For years, the Australian championships had operated in the shadow of their New Zealand counterparts, whose well-resourced and long-running live stream had set a benchmark that Australia had yet to match. In 2024, held in Maryborough, Victoria, Pipe Bands Australia decided to change that.
They approached Fixon Media Group to produce a live stream of the 2024 Championships that would set a new standard for the digital presentation of Australian pipe band competition.

THE CHALLENGE
Closing the gap on New Zealand.
The New Zealand Pipe Band Championships had long been considered the benchmark for pipe band competition coverage in the southern hemisphere. Well resourced and professionally produced, their annual live stream gave the New Zealand competition a digital presence and international reach that the Australian Championships could not match.
Pipe Bands Australia’s ambition was clear; to produce a live stream of the 2024 Championships that would establish a credible digital standard for Australian pipe band competition. One that could be built upon and improved year on year as resources grew, with the long-term goal of matching or surpassing the New Zealand production.
The challenge was to achieve that standard within the resources available, without compromising on the quality of the final product.
THE sOLUTION
Four cameras, live drone, and eight hours of coverage.
We proposed a four-camera live stream covering both performance circles, Circle A and Circle B, with production decisions made specifically to elevate the coverage beyond what audiences had seen from Australian pipe band competition before.
To raise the standard further, commentary was provided by Stephen Matthews, whose knowledge of the competing bands is unmatched in the Australian pipe band community.
Of the four camera angles, two were conventional coverage positions across both circles. The third was a roaming camera deployed within Circle B to capture the raw emotion, focus, and precision of band members up close – an angle rarely seen in pipe band coverage and one that immediately distinguished the Australian production.
The fourth was live drone footage captured throughout the day, giving the broadcast a cinematic scale that reflected the significance of the event.
Audio presented its own challenge. Pipe Band Championships require crisp, accurate sound capture to do justice to the performance. We placed shotgun microphones at both Circle A and Circle B, activating each as coverage switched between the two, ensuring the audio quality matched the visual standard throughout.

THE RESULT
Eight hours. Three streams. A new benchmark.
The 2024 Australian Pipe Band National Championships live stream ran for eight hours across three separate productions, The Parade, the Morning Session, and the Afternoon Session.
The response from viewers, key stakeholders, and event promoter the Maryborough Highland Society was overwhelmingly positive. For the first time, the Australian Championships had a live digital presence worthy of the competition it represented.
MOVING FORWARD
A baseline built to grow.
The 2024 production established exactly what Pipe Bands Australia set out to achieve; a credible, high-quality digital standard that gives the Australian Championships an international platform for the first time.
Each year from here, the production can be refined and expanded as resources grow. The goal of matching the New Zealand National Championships coverage is no longer aspirational. It is a matter of time.
