Synopsis
Since 1878, only two coaches have reached the pinnacle of success at the Stawell Gift five times: Fergie Speakman and Brett Robinson.
For Robinson, winning a sixth title isn’t just about victory; it’s about fulfilling a personal pledge to leave an indelible mark on Australia’s most prestigious race—a promise he made to himself years ago as a runner.
Yet, as the 2024 finals approach, this dream is tested in ways no one could have anticipated. On the morning of the race, an unprecedented downpour drenches the historic grounds of Central Park in Stawell, turning the track into a flood zone and casting doubt on whether the race will happen at all.
The Viking Athletics Squad, based on the Gold Coast and led by Robinson, faces their greatest obstacle yet as they confront nature’s unpredictable forces and the mental and physical toll of preparation under extreme pressure.
This film delves into the relentless pursuit of excellence within the Viking Athletics Squad, exploring not just the quest for a record-breaking victory but the dedication, fine margins, doubts, and mental fortitude required to succeed at this elite level.
Through the squad’s journey, viewers gain a front-row seat to the highs and lows of the 2023/24 Victorian Athletic League season, witnessing the introduction of major competition for the Vikings and the sacrifices that define their pursuit of greatness.
“Six” captures a unique chapter in Australian sporting history—a story about resilience, ambition, and the relentless spirit of a coach determined to etch his name into the annals of the Stawell Gift.
